In our final section of the Guide to Alternative Transportation, we’ll be looking at how using your own body can be the best way to travel. Of course, this can be a bit difficult when traveling long distances, but when you integrate self-travel into your daily routine, you can start to see some major savings for both your pocket and the earth.
That said, let’s see how you can start traveling more sustainably!
The Power of You
When it comes to self-powered travel, you have a number of options that largely depend on self-preference. For a moment, think about all the types of self-powered vehicles you’ve seen on the road. There are definitely some unique contraptions out there – it’s just up to you to decide to use them or not.
- Walking/Running – Walking and/or running is an excellent way of getting around. The vehicle? The legs you’ve been given! While this isn’t the fastest way of getting around, you’ll really get to know you area, the streets, and maybe even the people. This is the ultimate scenic route!
- Biking – Biking is another low-impact form of traveling. Despite requiring a bit of raw materials, bikes can make getting around quick, simple, and healthy. Plus, many public transportation systems accommodate bikers by including racks on the fronts of buses and special lock up areas.
- Skateboarding – Though this might not be your first choice for alternative travel, skateboarding can be a quick and fun way of getting around. Slightly slower than bikes, but noticably faster than walking, skateboarding (or longboarding) can be an excellent choice of travel.
- Roller Blades – Though the roller blade craze from the 90s may have died out, that doesn’t mean you have to stop strapping on your 6-wheeled shoes. Roller blades are low impact, fun, and can get you from point A to point B quickly!
Integrate Sustainability (and Health)
The best part about self-powered travel is that there are zero carbon emissions, no waste, and is good for both the planet and the people on it. Not only does this help us clean up our atmosphere, but it also helps keep us healthy. Of course, by using your own body to power travel, you’ll be exercising. And exercise, as we know, is a part of a healthy, well-balanced lifestyle. It helps strengthen our bodies, prevent disease, and support a long and happy life.
With that in mind, start making a conscious effort to include self-powered travel into your daily routine!
