Your local supermarket can be a great resource for organic beauty products that are versatile (since you can eat them too!). For example, you can use fruits and vegetables such as avocado, papaya, and banana to blend facial and hair masques. People have also been using eggs, honey, and milk for centuries as beauty treatments. You can find some great recipes at All Natural Beauty.

One of the reasons honey is so useful  is because it is a natural humectant, attracting and retaining moisture. It also is naturally anti-bacterial and very useful as a beauty ingredient. Honey.com has many recipes that use the natural properties of honey to treat skin and hair problems and provide daily maintenance.

One of my favorite recipes for a natural facial cleanser was rumored to be created by Empress Josephine, wife of Napoleon Bonaparte, who was known for her clean and glowing skin. You'll need to keep this one in your refrigerator since it uses fresh milk, but it will last for a couple weeks. You can add a little bit of honey to the mixture to thicken it up and add extra moisturizing power.

  • 1/4 pure Aloe Vera gel
  • 2 tablespoons fresh organic whole milk (raw if available)
  • Mix together the two ingredients. Store in the refrigerator.
  • To use: Pour a small amount in your hand and massage gently into your skin. Rinse well with tepid water and pat dry.

With the rise of “green awareness,” new organic makeup products have come on the market. Makeup is a bit more difficult to make at home than solutions for body and hair care, so I recommend allotting a significant portion of your beauty care budget towards make-up.

Mineral makeup is the easiest way to go natural for skin makeup. There are many mineral makeup companies out there. Some of the major brands include BareMinerals, Aromaleigh, and Everyday Minerals. You can also find natural based makeup products like Ecco Bella mascara, which uses a recipe based on clay and iron oxides, leaving out chemical additiPin Itves. Ecco Bella also offers lipsticks, skin makeup, and more that is natural based and pretty reasonably priced.

You can find most of these products in your local beauty supply stores, health food stores, or online at websites like Amazon.com.

Remember, you get what you pay for in natural based beauty, as with anything. Organic beauty can be done on a budget, but remember to prioritize and use the resources available to you. Buy products that are versatile and make things at home whenever you can.

It can actually be a lot of fun, and you'll known exactly what is going into the products that you apply to your skin and hair daily.
