It’s tough when you’re trying to shop for what’s really healthy. So many brands today work diligently to impress an image of “everything you want, and more.” What this spawns is rampant greenwashing, over promising, and a plethora of products that say they work when in reality, they don’t. Or if they do, it comes at the expense of something more important than soft skin – your health, for example.
Lucky for us, we’ve got companies like Pharmacopia, an organic, natural body care company that is working harder at making great products than convincing you they are the panacea you’ve been waiting for. What this results in is high-quality, purpose-driven products. With a number of their products in hand, the staff here at Organic Soul (along with some family members) have been testing out their products for the last few days. Here’s what we’ve come up with!
Bringing Life Back to the Body with Pharmacopia
Through all the testing and talking, I’ve found that one aspect of the products really stood out: the scent. Every product had a wonderfully pungent, yet mild scent to it that shouted “I am natural”. Not only is it nice aromatherapy, but it also helps keep you feeling fresh all day. Let’s look at two broad areas: soaps and suds and lotions and hand creams.
Soaps and Suds
In the way of soaps, Pharmacopia has some great products that clean you without leaving any residues or grimes. In our little starter pack, we tried out the Verbena Everyday Soap Bar, the Jasmine Everyday Soap bar, and the Verbena Facial Cleanser (which I couldn’t seem to find on the website). Unlike store bought soaps, it seemed like these were more “fluid” – by that, I mean they didn’t seem to “hold” the water. In the past, I found that soaps of poor quality tend to generate too many suds, almost making a soap-like paste in your hands. With these, though, it was a very light layer of suds, and the soap bar didn’t even much gunk in our soap dish. Each of these bars also was, as mentioned above, GREAT smelling (especially the facial cleanser!).
The Jasmine Everyday Body Wash was also quite nice. Though I personally tend to enjoy bar soaps more, I had my mom try it out and she loved it. It too carried a light scent, humble suds, and a feeling of tender care rather than harsh cleaning. When it came to the shampoos, I tried out the both the Everyday Verbena Shampoo and Conditioner. I really liked the shampoo – it carried itself with the same qualities as above. The conditioner was also good, but I wish it would have ‘smoothed’ the hair a bit more. Some people actually don’t like this – that extra smooth hair feeling – because of their hair type or simply personal preference, so I don’t think it’s too much to worry about.
Smooth out that Skin
When it came to the lotions, Pharmacopia blew the standard stuff out of the water, and with ease. The first lotion we tried was the Everyday Verbena. It brought a great citrus scent with it that helps to pick you up with just a sniff. At the same time though, it was mild in its overall approach. Needless to say, it was quite pleasing to the olfactory sense. If you are looking for a great lotion that you can apply twice daily without much thought, this – and likely all of the body lotions by Pharmacopia – is a great choice.
The real winner here, though, was the Verbena Everyday Hand Cream. As our Connector of Organic Soul’s, Sara Krish, noted, “Most Shea butter products are really greasy…but this one didn’t stand on the top of my hands. My hands felt moisturized, but not greasy. That’s a big thing for hand creme. This one just didn’t ‘oil up’.” This made for a smooth spread that actually revitalized the skin. We strongly recommend checking this product out! Besides that, Sara also loved the lib balm. As she said, it was “very moisturizing. It goes on soft, making my lips feel like they’re soft and smooth, not coated with something.”
A Company to Bring Home
You can really get a sense of why Pharmacopia is as driven as it is when you take a look at the story behind it. The founder, Lisa Levin, was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and needed something that Western medicine couldn’t seem to provide. After trial and error, Levin found herself getting the success she sought through a change in diet and awareness. Instead of seeking to combat the problem with prescriptions, Levin worked to fix the root of the problem – inflammation and toxicity in the body.
Years later, she brings that same purity to Pharmacopia so she can bring it to you. As she said, “On the skin, in the body.” Now that’s a mission we can bring home to show the parents.
