Peggy English and Patty Nalley are no strangers to the challenges of conscious shopping. Like many of us, they found this to be a tedious, cumbersome task, requiring them to run around to several stores for all their green needs. At times, it wasn’t uncommon to come up empty handed. Sure, they wanted to switch out the sheets with healthier, safer organic fabrics, but that’s often easier said than done.
To quote a well-known frog, “It isn’t easy being green.”
With this problem in mind, Peggy and Patty became determined to provide a solution. People needed a single place to go – a place where one could find the necessities for both young and old, boy and girl: people needed a ‘green’ general store. Enter Organic Bug.
The Beginnings of Organic Bug
During the onset of Organic Bug, Peggy and Patty might not have had the skill sets one would expect for an online marketplace. Patty, for instance, was in travel consulting and radio production while Peggy was involved in custom-home building and interior design. That said, when it came to developing Organic Bug, the two found that some “on-the-job-training” was needed. As Peggy whimsically mentioned over the phone, there are always challenges when starting an online business, especially for those from the older generation and especially during a time of economic depression.
Despite the vicissitudes faced, the two were determined, and that determination pulled them through. Amazingly, in a one-year period, Organic Bug was turned from an idea into a reality. In 2006, the site was live and a single-source style general store was available to the masses. The rest, as they say, is history.
Fun Products with Fantastic Purpose
In addition to the learning curve of starting the business, the team was also constantly discovering new things about organic living and sustainability. The journey of Organic Bug exposed them to dozens of unique businesses they fell in love with. As Peggy noted, the vendors at Organic Bug have something of a community relationship with the business rather than a strictly professional one. After all, these are people who care about the world, its people, and the future generations. Green business makes for some enjoyable bedfellows.
One of the coolest products found on Organic Bug are the Whiskey Stones. Perfect for chilling out that whiskey (or keeping that tea or coffee warm), these soapstone squares are a fun, reusable tool for your drinks. Not only do they outlast ice cubes (in the case of chilling), but they also help avoid the watering down of your whiskey!
Another big hit is the Soapstone Griddle. Just throw it on your regular stovetop and you’ve got yourself an indoor grill. While this might seem odd to some, this is a luxury for those with teeny-tiny apartments like those in New York. Plus, when you’re not using it, it makes for a pretty tremendous paperweight (we’re joking, of course.)
Organic Bug is also a great place for fashion, with whole lines of clothes for men, women, and children. One of the best sellers has been the line of clothes sourced from bamboo. Take the Bamboo Dreams Cleo Gown, for example. Natural, organic, and sustainable, this piece of clothing makes a great gift for someone special – or hey, just for yourself!
When I explored the site, there were tons of products just like those above. From dehydrators to pasta maker additions for your juicer, you can literally find anything you need on Organic Bug. That said, I’ve got to say they’ve done more than become a simple general store – they’ve become the one-stop storefront for anything green and/or sustainable. Start following them on Facebook and keep an eye on for some fun ways to win some of these great products!

To us here at Organic Soul, the quality of the site can’t speak for the business in its entirety. It matters who’s behind it and for what reasons. Whether you identify with “green” or not, Organic Bug makes online shopping simple and fun!
