We all know that breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day. So what do you like to whip up the most? How often are you able to do it? I sometimes find myself stressed for time, so I’m stuck with a soggy bowl of cereal even though I’d prefer a nice hearty vegetable omelet. I feel like the only way I can make a good breakfast is to wake up earlier so I can get out of the morning grog.
What about you?

Our morning routine is a mad dash to get everyone (hubby, toddler and I) fed, lunches prepared and out the door by 8:30 – so I can totally identify with the ‘no time for breakfast’ feeling. For over a year now, we’ve been enjoying a green smoothie for breakfast, and it is such a part of my daily routine that my body really does miss it if I skip out on a day. Even on weekends we opt for the green smoothie for breakfast, and then might cook up something special like pancakes or waffles for lunch instead.
The basic recipe is here: http://www.awakenedwellness.com/going-green-for-earth-day. I customize mine with hemp or chia seeds for protein, flax oil for healthy fats/omegas, and a variety of superfoods like goji berries, maca, and cacao for a nutritional and energetic boost. Keeping a variety of frozen fruit on hand (usually strawberries, blueberries and peaches) let’s me change up the flavor from day to day too.
It takes only a few minutes to dump everything into a blender in the morning, and then you can either sit and drink it at home, or add it to a to-go cup and take it with you for those extra busy mornings.

Thanks Rachel! I’m making it a point to try that tomorrow! And I love the idea of making those for Earth Day! Now I’ve just got to get my hands on some of those beautiful little flowers for garnish…

Fruit smoothie for breakfast for us all and for me a hand full of raw nuts! It’s fast and easy. My body needs a little protein in the mornings and the nuts seems to hold me until lunch. Since we are gluten free and dairy free it is not so easy to prepare food, My youngest has a GF waffle or GF rice cereal and almond milk. I think today’s families really all have breakfast on the go. It is great to have non sugary foods w/ less starches on hand for those times. Great smoothie recipe.

Okay, this is going to sound crazy, but it’s AMAZING: Grilled Vegetarian Cheese with Honey and Apples. All you do is cover your pan in some olive oil, put on the bread, then squirt a GENEROUS helping of honey onto each slice of bread on the side that is facing up. Then apply your cheese slices on each slice of bread (mozzarella flavored is best, swiss works too, though.). Then add VERY thin cut apple slices on top of the cheese. When the bread is golden brown, assemble your sandwich, and it’s seriously the sandwich of the Gods, I kid you not. It’s a nice sweet flavor to start your morning, and the protein from the cheese mixed with the vitamins of the apple is a great way to add pep to your step.

I like to make oatmeal with raisins &/or any dried fruit. I make breads/muffins loaded with oats, whole wheat, rye and fruit or veggies for breakfast. I make it the night before, so all I need is to get some coffee, tea or juice. Love to dunk the breads in coffee!

You’ve got to try steel cut oats with walnuts and bananas! Check out the full recipe on my blog, Pizza and Pilates – http://pizzaandpilates.tumblr.com/post/3681160028/your-new-favorite-breakfast
It’s filling, delicious, and you can make it ahead of time then just heat up the portion you want for the rest of the week. Enjoy!

I usually eat plain yogurt w/ Bear Naked granola on top (the fruit & nut kind is my favorite!).
We also like fruit smoothies, pancakes, and homemade granola bars.

either Oatmeal in a Jar, soaked overnight w/almond butter, cinnamon, walnuts or sliced almonds, dried cranberries, other nuts/seeds or chopped dried figs. I then add 1/4 c oats & cover w/generous amount of almond milk or coconut milk (So Delicious or Silk brand-not the kind in a can) and maybe cardamom, fresh or dried ginger, sometimes, part of a can of pumpkin puree. Then it soaks up overnight and can be eaten cold or warmed a bit.
or
lateley I’ve been feasting on all kinds of fresh fruit, topped w/spices, chopped fresh ginger, shredded coconut and chia gel. I call it Tropi-chia or Very Berry Chia depending on what fruit I have!
I make my chia gel w/1 part chia to 5-6 parts liquid. Most of the time I use partly whatever juice I have on hand plus whatever nut/seed milk I have. This time it’s organic Apricot/Mango juice w/unsweetened So Delicious coconut milk. MMMM like pudding for brekkie! healthy cleansing pudding!

Greek yogurt (I like the non fat) with honey and granola.
I buy the single servings of the yogurt. (my personal fav is the Chiobani plain non fat or with honey) First I drizzle the honey in the bottom of a small dish or ramekin, then put the yogurt on and then top with a handful of granola. Bear Naked Honey & Nuts or Nature’s way Apple & Blueberry but it’s whatever you like. I never thought I would eat plain non fat yogurt but something about this combination makes me want it every morning.

Does anybody ever eat cooked plantains for breakfast? When I was in costa rica that was a staple along with their bean rice mix. They had lots of fresh pineapple and fruit there too. I loved eating breakfast there. I will whip up plantains when I can find them. That is my fav!
