Organic Wine Health Benefits

You’ve probably heard of organic wines, and may know that they’re said to come with health benefits. They are made from grapes just like standard wine, but organic wines are without sulfites (a common preserve in regular wine), and their grapes weren’t exposed to herbicides or pesticides.

However, is organic wine significant better for you? And, if so, what are the advantages of organic wines? Let’s look at eight of the most exciting reasons why it’s worth making organic wine a key part of your diet.

1. Lower Cholesterol

According to leading scientists in Spain, if your organic wine is made from high-fiber Tempranillo red grapes then you could significantly help your heart health by lowering levels of LDL (i.e. “bad” cholesterol) around 9-12%.

 2. Weight Loss

One of red wine’s health benefits is weight loss, thanks to the resveratrol in the skin of the red grapes. Firstly, our bodies convert piceatannol from resveratrol, which binds to fat cells in a way that stops them from growing and maturing. Secondly, resveratrol helps to regulate blood sugar, which influences appetite and can help to reduce the urge to overeat.

3. Blood Clot Prevention

Polyphenols (antioxidants in red wine) increase blood vessel flexibility, cutting the risk of unwanted blood clots that might otherwise cause a heart attack or stroke. Indeed, some studies suggest wine can be just as effective as aspirin in this regard.

4. Smooth Skin

One of the most exciting red wine health benefits for skin is that the antioxidants can help to keep your complexion smooth. They assist in controlling bacterial growth, reducing acne in much the same way as common topical treatments.

5. Reduced Risk of Allergies

Plenty of people are unable to drink standard wine because they’re allergic to sulphur, or to related compounds. All 100% organic wines will be a much better choice for those with allergies, allowing them to enjoy the pleasures and health benefits of wine without the risk of terrible headaches or other allergic responses.

6. Improved Immune Response

Antioxidants in your organic wine are linked to fighting infection. Some evidence even suggests that regularly drinking wine could reduce your risk of coming down with the common cold by up to 40%!

7. Mental Acuity

The resveratrol provided by your organic wine also has promising impacts on cognitive well-being. In particular, researchers at the Center for the Study of Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders have found that resveratrol reduces the formation of a protein that makes up the plaque in the brains of those with Alzheimer’s.

8. Reduced Cancer Risk

Pin ItFinally, scientists at the University of Virginia have recently found that drinking a glass of red wine a few times a week can help to starve nascent cancer cells in some cases. This is once again related to resveratrol, which seemingly inhibits a cancer-feeding protein.

So, is organic red wine good for you? As the above suggests, it most certainly can be—in moderation. Around 1-2 glasses per day seems to be compatible with good health.

But remember, that while drinking a glass of wine a day has been shown to have some health benefits, there are clearly better alternatives for antioxidants without the toxic effect of the alcohol.  Examples would be Pomegranate juice, Goji berry juice, Acai, and Mangosteen to name of few.
